Steel Engraving

The most demanding graphic technique

One of the oldest graphic techniques. It belongs to intaglio printing methods. Due to the limited number of impressions from copper plates, a more durable material had to be used. Steel plate allowed for printing very high runs.

Handcrafted steel engravings most commonly featured portraits of significant rulers, cityscapes (so-called vedute), or scenes illustrating the crafts of the period.

Engraving offers possibilities for detailed and delicate work that may be entirely unattainable through other printing methods. Currently, steel engraving is declining on a large scale, but it still maintains its position as one of the most significant techniques in the artistic and printing world.
